How I Became a Health Insurance Agent in Pilibhit After Retirement—Pratap Singh’s Story

My name is Pratap Singh. I’m 63 years old and a retired government compounder. For over 30 years, I worked in a Primary Health Centre (PHC) just outside Pilibhit. During my time there, I saw everything—pregnant women walking in with barely any money, families struggling to afford even basic medicines, and old parents unable to pay for their own treatment.

It used to hurt me. People would only realize the value of financial protection after they had already suffered. And the truth is—most of them didn’t have health insurance. They thought they wouldn’t need it. But when emergencies came, they were left helpless.

So, when I retired from the PHC, I knew I didn’t want to sit idle. I also knew I didn’t want a full-time job. I wanted something flexible where I could use my knowledge and experience, keep myself engaged, and also earn a decent income to support my wife and myself.

That’s when I started exploring how to become a health insurance agent in Pilibhit.

I first watched some YouTube videos to understand how the insurance business works. Then I searched online and came across several platforms. But one name that stood out for me was InsuranceDekho. What I liked was that I could sell different kinds of policies—health, motor, and life—and all from one place. It was simple and designed in a way that even someone like me, with basic digital knowledge, could handle it.

I applied online and got started.

But here’s the thing: I didn’t want to “sell” right away. I believed people first needed to understand why insurance matters. So I reached out to the people I knew—nurses and other compounders working in private clinics in and around Pilibhit. I spoke to them and explained how a good health insurance plan could save lives and protect savings. I asked them to spread the word to their patients too.

For almost two months, I kept doing this—talking, educating, and building trust. And then, I got my first customer. A young father came to me wanting to buy health insurance for his family. That day felt like a turning point. Since then, it hasn’t stopped.

Today, I make around INR 40,000 to INR 45,000 a month. In some months, I’ve even earned INR 60,000. Not bad for someone who thought retirement would be the end of earning.

More than that, what gives me peace is that I’ve helped people at the time they needed it the most. I’ve personally guided families during hospitalization, ensured they got treated at network hospitals, and supported them through the claim process. They didn’t have to run around or feel lost. They now trust me—not just as a POSP agent, but as someone who’ll be there when things go wrong.

I also have to thank the support team at InsuranceDekho. Any time I have a doubt or one of my customers needs help, they step in quickly. That kind of support gives me confidence. Because selling the policy is just the beginning. The real work is building long-term relationships.

In these 4 years of working with InsuranceDekho, not a single customer of mine has gone elsewhere to renew their policy. That says something.

What I love is that I can do all this from home, at my pace. I spend 2–3 hours daily, and it keeps me active without tiring me out. At this age, it’s important to feel useful, connected, and independent. This work gives me all that.

If you’re someone thinking of becoming an insurance agent—whether you’re young and want a side income or retired like me—I strongly recommend you take this step. You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to care about people and be willing to guide them. And if you’re from a healthcare background like I am, you already understand how important timely treatment is—and how much insurance can help.

My journey as a health insurance agent has not only given me income but also a purpose. And for that, I’m grateful.
