An interview with 22-year-old Akash Singh, who found a way to earn more and fund his higher education without leaving his hometown.
Q: Akash, tell us a little about your background. Where does your story begin?
Akash: I’ve been working at Sharma Food Corner, a dhaba on GT Road in Pratapgarh, since I was a teenager. I do 12-hour shifts and used to earn INR 15,000 a month. My parents and younger siblings depend on me, and after paying household expenses, I was left with nothing.
Q: What was the turning point for you—when you realized something had to change?
Akash: It was when my father’s diabetes got worse. We suddenly needed INR 35,000 for his treatment. I didn’t even have INR 3,000. That moment broke me. I’d been working for eight years and still had no savings. I felt stuck, like there was no future.
Q: So how did insurance come into your life?
Akash: One night, I overheard a few truck drivers talking at the dhaba. One of them said he also works as an insurance agent and makes an extra INR 10–15K a month on the side. He was a full-time driver, but he still sold policies to people he knew—other drivers, mechanics, and locals.
That really got me thinking. If he could do it alongside his main job, maybe I could too.
Q: What did you do next?
Akash: I started searching on YouTube—“how to become an insurance agent,” “what is a PoSP,” things like that. At first, I didn’t understand much. The language was tough and technical. But I didn’t stop.
Then I came across InsuranceDekho. The website looked simple, so I filled in my phone number on a form. I wasn’t expecting much. But the next day, someone called me.
Q: What did they explain to you?
Akash: They explained everything—how to become a PoSP agent, what the IRDAI exam is, and how the training works. Everything was in simple Hindi, not complicated English. I felt comfortable asking questions.
The best part? The training was free, and I could take the exam right here in Pratapgarh.
Q: Was it easy to pass the IRDAI exam?
Akash: The training really helped. It covered the basics—how insurance works, what a policy is, and how to talk to customers. I gave the exam at a local center and passed on the first try.
But there was one catch—you have to sell at least one policy in the first month to activate your license.

Q: That sounds challenging. How did you sell your first policy?
Akash: It wasn’t easy at all. I didn’t know who to approach. But I remembered those truck drivers. I spoke to one of them and offered to help port his motor insurance policy. I explained how it could save him money. He agreed.
That first commission—INR 400—felt like I’d earned a crore. It was a huge confidence boost.
Q: What’s your income like now from insurance?
Akash: I still work at the dhaba, but I also earn INR 20–25,000 every month just from insurance. Sometimes more. I use WhatsApp and InsuranceDekho’s app to issue policies within minutes. People from nearby areas now call me directly.
It’s like I’ve unlocked a second income stream—and it’s stable.

Q: We heard you’ve gone back to your studies too?
Akash: Yes! I’ve enrolled in BCA from IGNOU. I want to become an app developer one day. For years, I couldn’t study because of family responsibilities. But now I can manage both income and education. It feels good to be doing something for my future.
Q: What would you say to others like you in towns like Pratapgarh?
Akash: If you’re earning less or feel stuck, try this. You just need a smartphone and the willingness to learn. InsuranceDekho gives you all the tools, free training, and guidance.
Even if you’re a driver, delivery guy, mechanic, or shop worker—anyone can become a PoSP agent and start earning.
