From Garage Supervisor to Insurance Advisor: A Conversation with Vijay Bhati from Jodhpur

In the heart of Jodhpur’s Basni area, 40-year-old Vijay Bhati spends his day supervising repairs at a bustling car garage. But when his daughter’s education in Delhi pushed the limits of his monthly earnings, he discovered a new way to supplement his income, by becoming an insurance agent in Jodhpur with Insurancedekho. We sat down with Vijay to understand how he balanced two worlds and unlocked new financial freedom.

Q: Vijay ji, tell us a little about yourself and your background.

Vijay:
Main Jodhpur ke Basni area mein rehta hoon. Pichhle 15 saal se ek car garage mein supervisor hoon. Din bhar customers ke car servicing aur repairs ka kaam dekhna mera routine hai. Mere ghar mein meri patni aur meri 15 saal ki beti hai, jo abhi Dilli ke ek school mein hostel mein rehkar padh rahi hai.

Q: That must be a big responsibility. Sending your daughter to Delhi for education is no small decision.

Vijay:
Bilkul. Uska sapna hai doctor banne ka. Aur mera sapna hai uska sapna pura karna. Par ek garage ki salary se Dilli ke hostel aur school ke kharche sambhalna mushkil ho raha tha. Tabhi laga kuch aur karna padega, warna uski padhaai beech mein na ruk jaaye.

Q: So what was the turning point? How did you get into insurance?

Vijay:
Ek din mera cousin Prakash aaya. Usne bataya ki woh ab InsuranceDekho ke saath insurance advisor bana hua hai, aur asaani se Rs 35,000–40,000 mahina kama raha hai. Pehle to mujhe vishwas hi nahi hua. Main bola, “Mere paas to already 9-10 ghante ki duty hai, aur bechna bhi nahi aata mujhe.”

Q: And what did he say to convince you to become an insurance agent in Jodhpur?

Vijay:
Usne ek simple baat boli, "Tu to garage mein kaam karta hai, jahan log apni gaadiyan leke aate hain. Unhi ko motor insurance ke baare mein bata de." Yeh sunke mujhe laga, haan yeh to main kar sakta hoon. Meri un customers ke saath already trust hai aur kahin jana bhi nahi padega.

Q: What was your first step to becoming an insurance agent in Jodhpur?

Vijay:
Mainne InsuranceDekho ke website pe lunch break mein sign-up kiya. Agle din unka call aaya. Unhone sab kuch Hindi mein samjhaya, training, exam process, sab kuch. Mujhe laga ye to kaafi simple hai.

Phir unki free online training shuru ki. Sab kuch Hindi mein bataya, bahut clear aur practical. Live sessions bhi milte hain jisme doubts pooch sakte ho.

Q: And the IRDAI exam? Wasn’t that intimidating?

Vijay:
Haan, pehle laga ki tough hoga. Par jab training material padha to sab basic tha, insurance kaise kaam karta hai, policies ke types, customer ko kaise samjhayen, yeh sab. Main ne pehli baar mein exam clear kar liya.

Q: Do you remember your first sale?

Vijay:
Bilkul. Ek customer Scorpio servicing ke liye aaya tha. Uski policy expire hone wali thi. Pehle to bola, "Yeh sab online agents pe bharosa nahi hota." Par jab maine usse bataya ki InsuranceDekho multiple companies ke plans dikhata hai, aur claim support bhi deta hai, tab usne bola, “Theek hai, tu hi karwa de.”

Q: Have you faced any challenges or doubts from customers?

Vijay:
Ek incident yaad hai. Ek customer ka accident ho gaya tha, aur wo panic mein tha. Mujhe raat 11 baje phone aaya. Main turant InsuranceDekho ke support team se connect hua. Unhone poore process mein uski madad ki, claim file karne se lekar settlement tak. Tab mujhe laga, main kisi sahi platform ke saath hoon.

Q: And how much do you earn now, alongside your garage job?

Vijay:
Main ab Rs 20,000–25,000 mahine ka extra kama leta hoon insurance se. Salary ke saath mila ke itna ho jata hai ki main beti ke hostel aur coaching fees aaram se manage kar paata hoon.

Q: How do you manage both jobs? Doesn’t it get hectic?

Vijay:
Haan, thoda busy ho gaya hoon. Par main ye kaam smartly karta hoon. Jab customer servicing ke liye aata hai, main casually puchta hoon ki policy renew karni hai kya. Dheere-dheere log bhi mujhe insurance ke kaam ke liye approach karne lage hain.

Bohot bada role. Unki team ne mujhe sirf training nahi di, balki sales ke tips bhi diye, customer ke doubts kaise clear karein, unke needs kaise samjhein, yeh sab. Jab bhi koi dikkat hoti hai, claim ho, renewals ho, ya policy comparison, woh humesha available rehte hain.

Q: Last question, Vijay ji. What would you say to someone in Jodhpur or anywhere who’s already working but wants to earn more?

Vijay:
Main sirf itna kehna chahunga, agar main kar sakta hoon to aap bhi kar sakte ho. Na koi shop chahiye, na koi investment. Sirf phone aur thoda dedication. Apna regular kaam chhode bina bhi aap ek naya income source shuru kar sakte ho.
